The Doers

“History reveals that left-brain people have been creating art for a long time now”

Working with analytical thinkers & doers…

…People who are driven toward taking action and solving problems. They are, by nature, curious people (curiosity is a key ingredient of effective inquiry). And it is not uncommon for scientists and engineers, doctors and lawyers, or leaders in finance and technology to discover that having an exceptionally high-level of career success doesn’t safeguard against being stumped by emotions or foundering in relationships.

Curiosity opens the door to new questions:

How is it that I have achieved more than most people could imagine, but am unfulfilled?
Why are my loved ones unhappy with me?

The answers are simple. (But there’s plenty of work still to come!)

You have put great time and effort into developing certain left-brain skill-sets (logic, linear thinking, fact-retrieval) at the expense of your right-brain development (emotions, intuition, holistic thinking). This is not to say that your right brain is some mental weakling, by any means. A successful thinker/doer is, in part, successful because of her creativity. But that creative brain has spent most of its life in lopsided servitude to “its better half”. Your aptitude with certain tools, those which you deftly wielded with grace and ease throughout life, helped you counter perceived weakness.

But that aptitude has caused your now overdeveloped left-brain to take over, doing all of the heavy-lifting for its atrophied partner even in areas where the right brain would be a more suitable match, naturally. And just as a weight-lifter whose favoring of biceps and shoulders to the detriment of the whole physique can lead to injury, so too has your favoring of the strong-side. And now you’re in pain because you’ve thrown out your “proverbial psychological back”.

We cannot think out way out of every problem. It’s time to build strength around the great potential in a largely untapped resource–your whole brain. The good news is that this kind of work is right up your alley. After all, doers and thinkers are excellent students who generally excel once they are given the right framework and roadmap.

At 1A Wellness, we have ‘how to’ therapists who can teach you the right-brain skills needed (identifying and tracking emotions, perspective taking, validation) to turn emotions into allies and valuable internal resources. Our clinicians are here to help you live in a more integrated and enriched way, drawing from both sides of your brain!

“The Boston area’s many colleges and universities make it an international center of higher education, including law, medicine, engineering, and business, and the city is considered to be a world leader in innovation and entrepreneurship, with nearly 2,000 startups. Boston’s economic base also includes finance, professional and business services, biotechnology, and information technology.”

“There’s no ‘should’ or ‘should not’ when it comes to having feelings. They’re part of who we are and their origins are beyond our control. When we can believe that, we may find it easier to make constructive choices about what to do with those feelings.” – Fred Rogers
